While the story in Anno Domini is centered around the Space War between the Federation and the ELS (an ongoing conflict that has been going on for nearly a decade), Awakening of the Trailblazer is centered around the battle between two of the most powerful factions in the war, the ELS-Federation and the Federation. The story unfolds around the battle between the two fleets, each side having their own goals and agendas. It focuses mainly on the political aspects of how the Federation and ELS are settling their differences. This allows the movie to really focus on the drama between the two fleets. It is the moment we see the rank and file of the two fleets when the Federation and ELS finally meet. For viewers who prefer a more militaristic approach to telling the story, the inclusion of a soldier during the war is a welcome one. Their two-hour long battle sequence is a definite highlight. In an anime that looks more like a modern day war movie, it is reassuring to see that this is based on a true story, and the battle sequences are no exception. In the anime, the two-hour battle sequence is broken up into six chapters. This allows the viewer to see the war unfold from all sides. In the anime, the first chapter, the Federation is attempting to use a Federation Carrier to use its gravitational anchor to pull itself out of the war. It fails to do so, but the Federation does manage to prevent the ELS from destroying it. The second chapter is where the ELS get their hands on the Federation Carrier, but it is a different Federation Carrier that they use in attempt to destroy the ELS. The ELS manage to get a hold of the Federation Carrier, but their efforts to destroy it are foiled once the Federation starts getting out the Federation’s top ace pilots. The third chapter is where the Federation is attempting to use a Federation Carrier to start a war against the ELS. This ends in failure, since the Federation Carrier is quickly destroyed. The fourth chapter starts with the Federation and ELS involved in a battle, which is where we see the climax of the war. After viewing it, I am still not 100% sure which side of the story Awakening of the Trailblazer leans towards, the Federation or the ELS. Perhaps I just have to rewatch the movie to decide for myself.
There are other treats in Awakening of the Trailblazer. The music that Masumi Itou composes is wonderful, and the title screen is a joy to behold. Each time I watch the film, I feel a bit more thankful for the artwork that animates it, as it is such a testament to the future of animation.
I have always enjoyed the manga and anime of Gundam 00, and Awakening of the Trailblazer is no different. The directing is nothing short of stellar, and the communication of the action is top-notch. For those looking for a deeper story that is not necessarily focused on the war, but on the people involved, I would recommend this title. The story itself is pretty straightforward, and although the resolution does not leave the audience with the sense of what is really going on, it is a solid and entertaining story nonetheless. Awakening of the Trailblazer is the best Gundam title to date, and I do not believe any Gundam will be able to top the standard set by this movie. This movie is just pure entertainment, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy a great Gundam viewing experience. 827ec27edc
